Do email signatures work on mobile?

Yes. Signatures render on phones, and we publish install steps for the mobile apps people actually use: Gmail on iOS, and Outlook on Android and iPhone.

The thing to understand first is that a signature set on desktop does not automatically follow you to a phone.

Mobile apps keep their own signature

Most mobile mail apps store a signature setting of their own, separate from the one on desktop. The Gmail iOS app calls it Mobile Signature, and it lives under the app's signature settings rather than syncing from anywhere else.

So when someone says "my signature is missing on my phone", the cause is almost always that the desktop signature was set correctly and the phone was never touched. It is not a rendering failure, and reinstalling on desktop will not fix it.

This is also why mobile is the most common gap in an otherwise complete rollout: the team looks fully deployed from the admin side, while a portion of outgoing mail from phones carries nothing at all.

What this means for a team rollout

If you deploy through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, the automated install covers the desktop and web experience. Phones need their own pass.

Two honest options:

  • Accept the gap. Mail sent from phones goes out without the full signature. For many teams this is a minority of outbound mail and not worth chasing.
  • Ask people to set it up once. Send them the relevant guide for their app. It is a one-time, few-minute task per person, and it does not need to be repeated when you later update the template, unlike the desktop signature.

Decide deliberately rather than discovering it later. If your signature carries a legal disclaimer, the gap matters much more, and the first option may not be acceptable.

Formatting on mobile

Mobile apps vary in how much formatting they keep in a signature, more than desktop clients do. Images, links, and styling that render perfectly on desktop may come through reduced on a phone.

Test with one device per platform before rolling out, and send yourself a real email rather than trusting the preview. A signature that has to survive a phone is a good argument for a simpler layout.

Common issues and fixes

Issue Cause Fix
No signature on mail sent from a phone The mobile app has its own signature setting that was never filled in Follow the guide for that app
The mobile signature is out of date It was set once by hand and does not update with the template Update it on the device, or accept desktop-only accuracy
Formatting looks reduced on mobile Mobile apps keep less formatting than desktop clients Simplify the layout, or accept the difference
It works on one phone and not another The two are using different mail apps Check which app each person uses. Steps differ per app
