Can I add a GIF to my email signature?
Yes. When you upload a banner image you can use an animated GIF, and it keeps animating in the clients that support it.
Accepted image formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and SVG.
How GIFs are treated differently
Other image formats are resized on upload to keep signatures light. GIFs are not resized. They are stored and sent exactly as you upload them.
That is deliberate, because resizing an animated GIF can break the animation, but it puts the responsibility for file size on you. A large GIF stays large in every email your team sends, and signature images are downloaded on every open.
Before uploading, check the file size. If it is measured in megabytes rather than kilobytes, compress it first or reduce the number of frames. A banner that adds a second to load is worse than a static image that appears instantly.
Where animation will and will not play
Animated GIFs are well supported in most modern email clients, but not universally. Some Outlook versions on Windows show only the first frame of the GIF rather than animating it.
This has a practical consequence: put the message in the first frame. If your GIF animates through three offers and the key one lands on the final frame, a meaningful share of recipients will only ever see frame one. Design so that a still of the opening frame still makes sense on its own.
Good and bad uses
Worth doing:
- A subtle movement that draws the eye to a call to action.
- A short, looping product or event teaser.
Worth avoiding:
- Anything long or high-resolution, because it costs load time on every email.
- Fast flashing or strobing, which is an accessibility problem for some recipients.
- Animation that carries information the first frame does not.
