Phone Number Format in an Email Signature
Write phone numbers in international format with a plus sign and country code, such as +44 20 7946 0958, label each one (M for mobile, T or O for office), and link them with tel: so they can be tapped.
What is Phone Number Format in an Email Signature?
Phone numbers are the most-used contact detail in many signatures and the most often badly formatted. The safest format for anyone with contacts in other countries is the international one: a plus sign, the country code, and the national number without its leading trunk zero, grouped with spaces for readability, for example +44 20 7946 0958 or +1 415 555 0123. The ITU recommendation E.123 describes this style for printed numbers. Purely domestic businesses can use national formatting such as (415) 555-0123, but should still use the international form in the tel: link behind it, so the number dials correctly from any phone. When a signature has more than one number, label them: M or Mobile, T or Tel, O or Office, D or Direct, plus extension numbers written as ext. 214. Listing more than two numbers adds clutter; most people need a direct or mobile line and, at most, a main office number. Avoid placing numbers in images, where they cannot be tapped or copied. Teams should agree one format, because a signature template with numbers typed differently by each person looks inconsistent, which is one reason organizations fill numbers from the directory.
