SRA Email Signature Requirements (UK Solicitors)

Firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in England and Wales have a specific signature obligation. Rule 4.2 of the SRA Transparency Rules states that an authorised body's letterhead and emails must show its SRA authorisation number and the words authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The same rules require the firm's website to display its SRA number and the SRA's digital badge. In practice, a compliant UK law firm signature carries the solicitor's name and role, the firm's name, contact details, and a footer line such as Smith and Co LLP is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA number 123456). Firms that are limited companies or LLPs also need the company details required by UK company law, such as the registered number, place of registration, and registered office address, and many add a list of members or a statement of where it can be inspected. Most firms also add a cybercrime warning telling clients that the firm will never change its bank details by email, because conveyancing payment fraud often starts with a spoofed solicitor's email. Because these lines are regulatory, they should be locked in the template rather than typed by individuals.
